Ordway Education Fall On-Sale on Friday, August 29th Starting at 7am!

The annual Ordway Education Fall On-Sale will take place on Friday, August 29, 2014 starting at 7am for weekday matinee performances that are especially designed for students in kindergarten through 12th grades. Ordway welcomes all public, private, charter, and home schools to our school performances. Tickets are $3.50 - $5.00 and we offer bus reimbursement to ALL schools that attend.

The Ugly Duckling & the Tortoise and the Hare

The Ugly Duckling & the Tortoise and the Hare is  a truly unique theater experience featuring larger-than-life electroluminescent characters that light up the stage. Relive two timeless stories about transformation, acceptance, patience and beauty through puppetry, dance and music.  Lightwire Theater will tell these stories with movement and dazzling puppetry in this fast-paced, visually stunning production for all ages.


Samite

The world-renowned musician Samite was born and raised in Uganda, where his grandfather taught him to play the traditional flute.  Today, his smooth vocals accompanied by the kalimba, marimba, litungu, and various flutes mesmerize audiences throughout the world.  Samite is the subject of the documentary, Song of the Refugee, distributed by PBS in 1998. It was while filming this that Samite’s work as a humanitarian began. In 2002, he founded Musicians for World Harmony, an organization dedicated to enabling musicians throughout the world to share their music to promote peace, understanding, and harmony among people.



The Adventures of Robin Hood

He robs the rich and gives to the poor. He sneaks around Sherwood Forest with his band of merry men. And his spiffy green tights are all the rage in medieval fashion! Scotland’s acclaimed theater company Visible Fictions returns with this inventive and humorous adaptation of the folk legend Robin Hood. From our valiant hero and his sidekick Little John, to Friar Tuck and Maid Marian, to the Sheriff of Nottingham hot on their heels, two actors take on multiple roles in a madcap production where nothing is as it appears, all set in the unlikeliest of places – a grocery store! Look out mean, greedy folks–your piggy banks may never be safe again!

Take a journey to the sea with Compagnia TPO from Italy and their unique interactive performance of Bleu!  Students will embark on an immersive theater experience through the Mediterranean Sea.  The story follows a sailoron a magical adventure under the seaamong the stones, sea shells and whispers of ancient legends, wandering through bustling sea ports and finally diving into the deep blue populated by fish, seaweeds, mollusks and mysterious ancient ruins of disappeared civilizations.


2015 Flint Hills International Children's Festival Global Arts Workshops

Engage your students in hands-on Global Arts Workshops during the Flint Hills International Children's Festival. These one-hour workshops are taught by Twin Cities' artists, and cost just $3.50 per student!


Latin American Folkloric Music

Explore the music and instruments of Latin American folkloric music with Ecuadorian educator and performer Leo Lara. Students will learn the text and meaning of traditional songs and rhythms of Latin American countries through interactive demonstrations and instrument try outs!

Heart of the Dance: Fancy Dancing

Recommended Grades 3-8 | 60 minute workshops
Work with championship Fancy Dancer Larry Yazzie to learn the basic forms and steps of high energy Fancy Dance. The workshop will end with a traditional round dance in which students can express themselves through their newly created dance steps!

Mexihca Culture & Dance

In this all-abilities dance workshop, students will learn the traditions, history and art of dance of the Mexihca (Aztec) culture with Kalpulli Yaocenoxtli.

Latin Social Dance

Cowles Center instructor, Giselle Mejia, will teach a wide variety of social dances born out of Latin America. Styles include salsa, merengue, bachata, cumbia, and mambo. Students get ready to move, as we will learn the basic steps to

Learn the techniques and history of taiko drumming with a taiko performing artist. Students get the opportunity to play on a taiko practice drum with a Mu Performing Arts instructor!

Hip-Hop Dance

The Performing Arts Classroom series provides students a unique glimpse in to World Music and Dance! These are 50-60 minute weekday matinees that feature world renowned performing artist from around the globe. Performing Arts classrooms take place in the Ordway’s Music Theater.These performances are on-sale now.

Nachito Herrera and his Cuban Orchestra
Oct. 7-8, 2014 | Recommended Grades 2-12

Ignacio “Nachito” Herrera stunned Cuban audiences at the age of twelve in performing “Rachmaninoff’s Concerto No. 2” with the Havana Symphony Orchestra. Today Herrera continues to be at the forefront of an exciting renaissance in Cuban music and is known as one of the of the world’s great Cuban pianists. In collaboration with members of the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba and the Havana Jazz Social club, Herrera et al. will take audience members on a musical voyage across space and time combining western classical music with traditional Cuban rhythms.




Creole Choir of Cuba

Prepare to be blown away: hear the passionate melodies, wild harmonies and richly textured arrangements of these ten inspiring male and female vocalists. Because
the choir members are descendants of Haitians, they sing much of their music in Creole, a language spoken by almost a million people in Cuba, as well as Spanish. Multiple award winners, this Grammy-nominated choir sings the vital music learned at home from grandparents and blends it with contemporary Cuban and Haitian sounds.






 

Dobet Gnahore

Widely considered one of contemporary African music’s most exciting talents, Dobet Gnahoré has astounded audiences with her thrilling stage presence, appealing melodies and powerful singing. Gnahoré’s diverse music composition moves from delicate ballads to upbeat African grooves. From Mandingue melodies to Congolese rumba, from Ivory Coast ziglibiti to Cameroon bikoutsi, from Ghanian High-Life to Zulu choirs, her music is varied and colorful. The sanza, balafon, calebasse and bongos join the guitar, the vocal backup accompanies Dobet’s warm and powerful voice as she sings in a range of African languages including Bété, Fon, Baoule, Lingala, Malinke, Mina and Bambara.







CONTRA-TIEMPO
Feb. 5-6, 2015 | Recommended Grades 2-12

Dedicated to transforming the world through dance, the activist dance company CONTRA-TIEMPO takes Latin social dance to new heights by infusing elements of Salsa, Afro-Cuban, and urban dance styles.  Full Still Hungry, the company’s newest work explores our relationship with food, along with its social, historical, and cultural impact through an invigorating blend of high-energy dance, live music, and spoken word.  Choreographed by Ana Maria Alvarez, the performance will include an original score composed by resident composer César Alvarez, live musical performances by a six-piece band of all-star musicians.


Camille A. Brown and Dancers

A co-presentation with St. Catherine University| O’Shaughnessy Auditorium

Camille A. Brown has sought to defy the boundaries between dance and theatre. The company’s new work depicts the complexities of carving out a positive identity as a Black female in urban American culture. Combining history and musicology with the fantastical approach of imagery this work sheds light on the grand narrative and dialogs about feminism, patriarchy, and how women negotiate themselves within this world. In addition the company will perform an excerpt from MR. Tol E Rance which celebrates African-American humor, examines “the mask” of survival and the “double consciousness” (W.E.B. DuBois) of the black performer throughout history and the stereotypical roles dominating current popular Black culture.



Cherish the Ladies

Celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day with Cherish the Ladies. With their unique blend of virtuosi instrumental talents, beautiful vocals, captivating arrangements and stunning step dancing, this powerhouse group combines all the facets of Irish traditional culture.  Taking their name from a traditional Irish jig, this all-female powerhouse group takes to the stage on fiddle, flute, whistle, guitar, piano, accordion, and bodhran, in an entertaining experience not to be missed!



 
Diavolo

Leaping, flying and falling, Diavolo utilizes trust and imagination in a surreal architectural playground to create metaphors through dance about life, humanity, and community. Company members use a fusion of many different movement vocabularies including everyday movement, ballet, contemporary, acrobatics, gymnastics, martial arts, and hip-hop to demonstrate teamwork as they maneuver and fly from object to object and into each others’ arms.






2014-2015 Broadway Songbook Series

The Broadway Songbook Series gives your students a window into the world of musical theater through the works of some of the most famous songwriters of all time! Each 90-minute performance will be a mix of the composers’ life stories, a glimpse into what made their work extraordinary and a sampling of their work through live vocal performances. The introduction of Rock & Roll not only influenced pop culture, it changed the modern musical as we know it.  With a shift away from traditional song and dance, this new style of show tackled social issues through contemporary music.  Rock & Roll on Broadway takes the audience on a ride through the decades with songs from iconic musicals such as Hair, The Wiz, Dream Girls, Wicked, Mamma Mia!, Jersey Boys and more.
